Gotye – Somebody That I Used To Know feat. Kimbra
Type: Popular Music (Australian example)
Musical Elements: Pitch and Duration, also drawing upon Contrast
Students are required to create an effective melody line that contrasts with the lead glockenspiel melody (“Baa Baa Black Sheep”) played in the excerpt of “Somebody That I Used To Know”. The composition must be 8 bars long, and must contain specific features relating to pitch and rhythm. The composition must start on the root (D in a D Aeolian mode), bar 2 must contain an ascending melodic contour and must finish on the 4th degree, and bar 8 must finish on the fifth degree. Relating to rhythm, the 8 bar composition must contain a variation of note values, including minims, crotchets and quavers and must contain at least ONE rest. Students will have to notate their composition in writing or through using software such as Sibelius.
Students are required to perform a short interpretation (24 bars approx.) of “Somebody That I Used To Know” utilising a Ternary structure (A B A). Section A is to be the lead glockenspiel melody line featured in the song that interpolates the nursery rhyme “Baa Baa Black Sheep” (8 bars). Section B relates to the 8 bar composition that students were previously required to do. This notion of this assessment is to be able to ascertain whether students can translate their composition from a written form into a performative one, and the ability to perform a successful contrasting adaption of a well-known piece. Students are to perform using glockenspiels or keyboards, and must use correct fingering/malleting technique. If class, or some students are advanced, them students could be asked to perform section C, an improvisational section of 8-16 bars that must utilise the D Aeolian scale (D, E, F, G, A, Bb, C).
Students are asked to complete an aural test on “Somebody That I Used To Know” that is to be conducted over 20 minutes. The test is to contain approximately 8-10 questions and relate to the concepts of PITCH and DURATION and contain at least one question relating to CONTRAST.
Students are required to research how the Gotye composed “Somebody That I Used To Know” of the album “Making Mirrors” from the links resourced, and write a paragraph (50 to 100 words) on how technology played a significant in the creation of the song. Students are to draw on the musical elements and discuss the contrast between Gotye’s song and the pieces he has borrowed or sampled from- Luiz Bonfá’s ‘Seville’ and “Baa Baa Black Sheep”.
